People who have need for wheelchair accessible housing may live in one of the homes that have been specially designed to meet their needs. Where people need 24 hour support, people may share a home with others with similar needs in order to provide for full-time staff support. Some people choose to share their homes with roommates or families who may provide support. Many people live in their own home and may have support within their home to enable them to live as independently as possible.

Do you need to have special training to work with people with disabilities?
Yes. The field of Disability Services establishes a set of skills that are needed to provide supports to persons with disabilities. Although specific training in community Community Disability Services is the preferred credential, people with training in Social Work, Nursing, Education, Child and Youth Services, are able to apply their skills to a career in rehabilitation, with additional in-service training. The Alberta Council of Disability Services (ACDS) has developed “Foundations” training  for Direct Service Workers which enables employees to complete this training on-the-job. For more information go to www.acds.ca.
